I contacted Ernie Ball and they said the total tension of the Earthwood Med Lt's was 172.14 ft lbs.
I'm going to replace those strings with some Thomastik's - either Plectrum AC111 (125 lbs) or Plectrum AC112 (168 lbs)
It's the most comfortable steel string acoustic guitar I've ever played.
Mine arrived with a nice low action and in perfect shape. I just might file the frets in a few places.
It's a keeper - high quality, a low price, sounds great and it's so easy to play.
Thanks for the review and for sharing the string tension specs. We hope you enjoy your Oliver Jr. Mahogany Live!
On 08/24/2023, I wrote a review about the Oliver Jr Live I purchased. The review is titled "Hopeful... but on the fence", and the main point was I liked the guitar, but there were a few disappointments which I outlined. Orangewood customer service responded to me quickly, and what I learned is, "If it ain't right, Orangewood is a company that will do everything reasonable to make it right."
From what I understand, there's no way to "change" a review, so I wanted to submit this follow-up review. I'll start by saying Omar, in customer service, not only reached out to me, but specifically addressed every issue I pointed out in my review AND his responses were meaningful and useful. He said customer satisfaction was the goal and presented three options: 1) Return my unit for an exchange. 2) Return my unit for a refund. 3) Return my unit and let them work on it.
I know returns are a hassle for everyone and an expense for the company, so I told Omar I would be willing to work on the unit myself to see if I could fix it, if they would allow that and send me the necessary parts. Omar agreed, and assure me that if I wasn't able to fix it with the parts provided, all the return options would still be on the table. I had the parts in just a few days, and was able to correct the main problems listed in my review. I felt this was a win for me and I hope it saved Orangewood a little hassle and expense as well.
The Oliver Jr Live is the first guitar I purchased online... sight unseen. I had some concerns with that approach, but decided based on Orangewood's pricing and the majority of reviews I read about their guitars, that I wanted to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.
NOTE: After doing some research and reading reviews on the preamp that comes with the Oliver Jr (and many other guitars and guitar brands), I determined that the tone differences available via the tone wheel on the preamp are fairly subtle and limited. Upon testing the preamp again in a quiet environment, I could hear the subtle difference in tone that could be achieved via the full range of the tone wheel, but primarily when chording vs picking individual strings. If significant tone control via the preamp is important to you, I would recommend getting the Oliver Jr rather than the Oliver Jr Live, and adding a different preamp. I don't expect to play with an amp very often, so if I need more tone control than what's available via the preamp, I'll use the tone control on the amp itself for that.
Thanks for your review, Rick! We appreciate you working with us to find a solution!
I like the tone--it's very nice for a guitar of this size. There are a few things though, that have me unsure about my copy at this point. They are:
1. One of the tuners feels like it slips in certain positions.
2. I thought neck-width would be fine because I have a dreadnought with the same nut width. But the strings on the Oliver Jr. are closer together than the strings on my dreadnought, which makes fingering more challenging.
3. I was disappointed in the setup as it came out of the box. The guitar was way out of tune and there is occasional binding/popping of the strings when tuning. The action was also a bit high. I made a truss rod adjustment which helped, but the action is still higher than on my dreadnought. Perhaps it would help to sand the bridge down a little, but I don't want string buzzing either.
4. On the preamp, when connected to a Peavey KB 4, the volume control works fine, but the preamp's tone control doesn't seem to have any impact on tone. I asked a couple of other people to listen. They couldn't hear any difference either.
5. This last one is cosmetic only and is on the back of the guitar, so not a big deal--but the center line printed on the back is angled slightly, leaving it a little (but noticeably) off-center at the neck end of the body.
So... I like the size and the tone. I plan to try a little more playing through the Peavey amp to listen hard for at least a subtle change in tone when adjusting the preamp's tone control. If a 2nd try confirms there's no audible change, I probably won't let that be a show-stopper as I won't be using an amp very often. But based on what I've heard so far from the tone control, I wouldn't have paid more to get the preamp in the "Live" version of the guitar, with the tone control as it is.
THE BOTTOME LINE? I think it's a decent guitar for the money. But... with just a little more attention to setup and cosmetic details, it would be a great guitar for the money. Orangewood also does a great job in communicating with the customer. Kudos for that.

I absolutely love everything about this little guitar 👌🎶👌🎶♥️ Worth every penny 👏
I was looking for a smaller, affordable, great looking, great sounding, and well-known guitar. After months of relentless searching online, I found the orangewood oliver jr. live. Everything about it screams "perfect." I was unsure if I was going to find a guitar that would meet all my requirements while being affordable, and I'm so so glad I found this guitar. And because it's from Orangewood, I had no doubt it was be top-notch quality. I really hope I can see more expensive 23.5 inch scale length guitars, when the time comes to upgrade my guitar. Although I don't see myself needing a new guitar anytime soon. I love this so much. Thank you orangewood!
